Alentejo
To discover Alentejo it is probably necessary to go back to the origins of Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula.
With a mixed heritage from the Phoenician, Celt and Roman civilizations, Alentejo is a place where the natural landscape, History and culture walk hand in hand!
If you are looking for a more cultural holiday, here you will find old documents, mosaics, cities in ruins and the oldest civilizations with megalithic monuments, such as the dolmens.
You may also discover the Arab presence, with some mosques, for the region suffered a strong influence from the culture and architecture of this people.
But this region is not restricted to the cultural aspects, as it is an area where nature, the countryside, farming and, above all, the cork production have opened the doors to the world and made Alentejo one of the best know regions of the country; you have beaches, the countryside, a landscape which spreads towards the horizon and very hot temperatures during the day, which decrease to a typical Alentejo twilight.
The region is rich in cork, one of the most famous raw materials of Portugal, extracted from cork-oaks, a very typical tree which influences the painted landscape, among the chestnut trees, the dry greens and, of course, the immense blue sky.
Santarém, Marvão or Monsaraz, Vila Viçosa, Borba, Alandroal or Elvas, the diversity of cultures and styles is immense. Come learn and explore what this region has to offer.
Get lost in the villages and towns immaculately painted in white, the rice fields, the mountains and plains, the rivers and lakes, for the peacefulness in Alentejo is rarely dull!
